  25. 1: What is Mosaic?
  26.  
  27. Mosaic is a client for the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is a new
  28. application on the Internet which allows pictures, sounds, animations to
  29. be viewed from anywhere on the Internet. Amiga Mosaic (AMosaic) is
  30. available from Aminet <ftp://aminet/comm/net/Mosaic1.2.1_AmiTCP.lha> and
  31. the Amiga Mosaic site. <ftp://ftp.omnipresence.com/pub/amiga/amosaic>

  33. Mosaic can also be used to access FTP servers from a GUI front end, and to
  34. access Gopher and many other services. The next release of Mosaic will
  35. even allow you to connect to telnet services listed on WWW pages.

  39. 2: What version of AmigaOS do I need?
  40.  
  41. AMosaic version 1.2 works with 2.x Amigas. You need AmigaOS 3.x to view
  42. inlined images. Other versions (including 1.2.1) work only on AmigaOS 3.x.

  47. 3: Why does Amiga Mosaic not do inlined images in AmigaOS 2.x?

  49. AMosaic uses 3.x's DataTypes system to display inlined images.

  53. 4: What networking software do I need?
  54.  
  55. There are versions of AMosaic 1.2 for use with any of DNET, AmiTCP 3.0b2,
  56. or AS225r2. Software derived from those two TCP/IP stacks or emulating it
  57. can also be used. Later versions should all be available for either AmiTCP
  58. 3.0b2 or AS225r2.

  62. 5: Amiga Mosaic keeps saying "failed to create application" when I try to
  63. start it. Why?
  64.  
  65. Because you don't have MUI installed, or don't have a recent enough
  66. version for Amiga Mosaic. Install the latest version.

  70. 6: Why does AMosaic require MUI? I hate MUI!
  71.  
  72. We like MUI. It made creating AMosaic much easier for us.

  77. Prefs.

  79. This is fixed in Amiga Mosaic 1.4 and later. If you can't run those
  80. versions, then don't do that.

  84. 8: Why doesn't Amiga Mosaic display external images?
  85.  
  86. Could be any number of reasons. First, make sure that you have an
  87. env:mosaic/mailcap file. Next, make sure that there is an entry in it for
  88. the type you are trying to display. Finallly, make sure that that entry
  89. has a %s in the command.

  93. 9: How do I use forms with Amiga Mosaic?

  95. You have to use version 1.4 beta or later.

  99. 10: How do I have Amiga Mosaic use a proxy server?
  100.  
  101. Set the environment variable for the protocol to the appropriate proxy.
  102. For example, to cause HTTP request to go to www.hut.fi:8001, set
  103. HTTP_PROXY to http://www.hut.fi:8001/. This only works with Amiga Mosaic
  104. 1.3 and above; previous versions use an obsolete proxy protocol.

  108. 11: Why doesn't the NO_PROXY variable work?
  109.  
  110. Because it isn't implemented yet.

  114. 12: I just get a window popped open on my screen when I tried to play at
  115. an external sound/view an external image:

  122. The problem is that you removed the %s from the line handling audio in
  123. your mailcap file. Amosaic is trying to pipe the audio to your player, but
  124. it can't. You need to fix your mailcap file.

  126. This answer applies to non-audio data too, and to versions of mosaic more
  127. recent than 1.3. As a side note, hours of fun can be had by turning up the
  128. speakers loud and playing that URL with a cat in the room.

  132. 13: How do I get Mosaic to open on it's own screen?
  133.  
  134. For MUI 2,3, run the MUI application, and take the following steps in it: 
  135.  
  136. 1) Make sure you are on the "System" page.
  137.  
  138. 2) Change application selector from "«Global»" to "AmigaMosaic".
  139.  
  140. 3) Use the screen selector to create a new public screen for Mosaic.
  141.  
  142. 4) Edit it as appropriate.
  143.  
  144. 5) Exit MUI with the Save button. 
  145.  
  146. You may need to run and exit Amiga Mosaic before you can select it in the
  147. application selector. 
  148.  
  149. For MUI 3.1, start with the MUI application, doing the folllowing: 
  150.  
  151. 1) Go to the "Windows" page.
  152.  
  153. 2) Click on the button closest to the "Gadgets:" label in the "Window
  154.    Control" frame.
  155.  
  156. 3) Save this 
  157.  
  158. Now, run Amiga Mosaic (or find it's window if it was running), and notice
  159. that there's a gadget that looks like the one you just enabled in the MUI
  160. application. Click on it, then click on the "Settings" item in the
  161. resulting menu. It brings up what looks like the MUI preferences editor.
  162. In that, do the following: 
  163.  
  164. 1) Go to the "System" page.
  165.  
  166. 2) Click the "Call Inspector" button in the "Public Screen" frame.
  167.  
  168. 3) Set up the screen you want Amiga Mosaic to run on in the resulting
  169.    requester, then save it.
  170.  
  171. 4) Now, use the screen selector to select that screen.
  172.  
  173. 5) Save the results. 
  174.  
  175. Amiga Mosaic should move to that screen.

  179. 14: Is there going to be a commercial version of AMosaic?
  180.  
  181. Almost certainly not. AMosaic is a port of NCSA X Mosaic, and the right to
  182. sell it commercially requires a rather expensive license.

  184. However, at least three different Amiga GUI web browsers are being written
  185. from scratch. The group that did Amiga Mosaic is working on one of them,
  186. and it will be commercial.

  260. Inetd assumes that nobody would want to connect to a service more than 10
  261. times a minute. For AmiTCP 3.0b2, this is hardwired into the code, and
  262. cannot be changed without source. You can ftp a patched version of inetd
  263. for AmiTCP 3.0b2. <ftp://ftp.phone.net/pub/mwm/inetd_for_httpd> For AmiTCP
  264. 4.1 and later, you can use the TOOMANY option on inetd to change this from
  265. the default value of 60 connections/minute.
